Go away you little devil! You make me fat! i hate you! Sounds familiar? People have been dishing away carbohydrates, rice for example to loose weight. Rice are to be blame for causing abdominal obesity especially in females i suppose. Well, if u take a stroll in your favourite cafeteria, can you see those girls with hot body takes alot of rice? Usually, you can just see them taking a little rice, maybe a spoon or 2.
By observation, people naturally think rice are bad, evil and make you fat. Pity little rice, such a small thingy, but can cause huge and dramatic effect .
Carbohydrates
What are them actually? Carbohydrates are long chain of hydrocarbon with alot of hydroxy group. For you who are not really into chemistry, i will dish those technical terms out.
Lay men term ( Recommended reading here)
Carbohydrates can be divided to TWO catagories, simple carb and complex carb. Simple carbs are sugar for example, our favourite table sugar where we add into our coffee for better day to our tongue. Complex carb can again be broken down to starchy carbs and non-starchy carbs. Starchy carbs are carbs like potatos and non-starchy carbs can be called fibers. You can find these fibers in green vegetables.
Explaination with boring terms
Carbohydrates can be distinguished by its number of monomers. Carbohydrate can be monosaccharides, oligosaccharides and also polysaccharides.
Monosaccharides (single, or simple sugar) and 3 of the major monosaccharides that impart on our body includes glucose, fructose and galactose. Glucose are found, hmm almost in everything while fructose are found in fruits and honey for example. Galactose which are epimer of glucose are usually found in lactose ( combination of galactose and glucose through beta glycosidic bond)
Oligosaccharide in the other end, are combination of at least 2 to 10 monosaccharides. Examples of dissacharides (2 monosaccharides combining) are sucrose ( glucose and fructose) , maltose ( glucose and glucose ) , lactose ( galactose and glucose ).
Polysaccharides in the other end is the long long long, i mean seriously long chain of polymers consisting of monomers of monosaccharides. They can be further distinguished by their chemical bonding patterns.
1. Plant starch
2. Glycogen
3. Cellulose in plant cell walls.
Continue blah-ing bout the chemistry of carbohydrate will make u sleep rite. Alright, i will stop there for you reader sake.
Carbohydrates are actually not devil, they are supposingly angel to us! Why i say so? To move your muscles, you need glycogen ( a form of glucose storage in body) . Without glycogen, you will feel weak and of course, every part of living cells in the body need energy to function properly, that includes your brain and heart. However, they use energy from keto-bodies, that is where ketogenic diet comes alive . Carbohydrates replenish our energy level during sport activities or any vigorous activities like cleaning the backyard with shovels. Besides, it can help transport of amino acids into muscles for tissue repairment or hyperthropy.
Starting to change your mind about carbohydrates? Wait wait, not so fast yet. Carbohydrates can cause insulin spikes in body. Ingestion of carbohydrates will increase blood glucose level or blood sugar level which causes body to response by releasing insulin.Insulin will react by lowering blood glucose level by transporting the glucose into muscles, or either increase conversion of glucose into fats.
*hmm, so the devil is Insulin rite?As you can see diabetes type 2 patients are usually obese.Well, not so fast, buddy. Insulin are good in my opinion, I will explain it in another post.
Nutrient timing
In my opinion, this is very important, i would list it as the number 1 factor to determine body composition. Starchy carbs for example bread, rice, potatoes are good to ingest after a long day or after workout to replenish your body energy level. I know what is in your mind, insulin rite? Well, after workout or exercise, our body insulin sensitivity will increase also, With the consumption of these starchy carbohydrates, insulin will just increase a little higher as it is more sensitive after exercise.
Fructose in the other hand found highly in fruits too will make you fat. (wow, i didnt knew this all along, i though fruits are suppose to help us get thin). Stop jumping to conclusion that fast, apples naturally high in fructose are having low Glycemic Index and thus will not spike your insulin level. Why is it? This is because fructose are metabolize differently! They can be only metabolize by the liver and not in muscle. So an high intake of fructose will easily make you fat as excess fructose that cannot be metabolize by liver once it is full will cause conversion of it to fats. This is why fructose have low GI. However, we cannot throw away apples from our life. Apples have high fiber content and eating an apple 15 minutes before meal actually helps to suppress appetite. This will helps not to overeat.
Green vegetables have high fibre and it causes you to feel full longer. Digesting vegetables need longer time and because of it, it can low glycemic index and you are safe to eat green vegetables as much as you like. Woah woah, wait choon, i dont get it. Alright i will explain. Green vegetables are actually very low in calories, and just to digest the food, you will need more calories. This is where negative calories food come in theory. Dish the negative calories food aside, it is actually very hard to overeat with green vegetables. try eating 500 calories of vege in 1 meal and you will know what i mean.
Simple sugar along with complex carb are metabolize the same way because everything is broken down to the simplest form before it is being used by the body. The only different is the absorption rate and glycemic index of it. Simple sugar, the name stated simple, means it is easily digested and absorbed by the body. This causes simple sugar have high GI. Glucose for example 100.
Conclusion
Are carbs evil or good? Well, i leave it to you to decide whether they are good or bad. As for me, its good because it provides me with strength and energy for my daily workouts.
