According to studies done by the JAMA ( Journal of the American Medical Association ) , it is been said that aerobics plus resistance training could help diabetes patients in lowering their diabetic severeness .It is also reported in Star Online dated 24/11/10 , http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2010/11/24/nation/20101124152229&sec=nation
"The researchers found that only the group that combined aerobics and weights both lowered their blood sugar and lost weight, although all three fitness groups reduced their waist sizes.
Fewer patients in the combo group started taking new diabetes drugs than in the other groups. Decisions on medications were left up to the patients' regular doctors during the study.
Forty-one percent of the patients in the combo group either decreased their diabetes medications or lowered their average blood sugar as measured by a common blood test, compared to 26 percent for weights only, 29 percent for aerobics only and 22 percent in the non-exercise group.
The blood sugar reduction achieved by the combo group was enough to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other complications, the researchers wrote, citing earlier studies". This was adopted from part of the star news online article.
This can be explained scientifically where exercise will increase insulin sensitivity. For those who do not know what is insulin sensitivity. It is simple as less insulin is needed to stabilize the blood glucose level for the increase of insulin sensitivity where insulin resistance brings the opposite meaning of it. In fact, Cardio exercise or rather aerobic exercise has the same aim with the resistance exercise which is to burn calories! This calories burned are from carbohydrate, protein, and fat. By doing weight training, one will gain muscle which induce higher metabolism rate due to increase of muscle mass. Higher metabolism rate means more energy is needed to maintain the body. By burning more calories than one consume, it leads to calories deficit. This will cause weight loss.
Generally, diabetes is always linked to obesity. This is due to hyperlipidemia (high amount of fats) can lead to diabetes because of high insulin resistance. By doing weight training, one can lower down the amount of fats in his/her body . With the addition of cardio exercise, one can improve cardiovascular system which include strengthening of heart and also burn some calories to reduce body fats. Insulin and leptin are actually closely related. Leptin and insulin have the similiar function which is to control the fat storage, energy storage, and alot of body metabolism physiologically. When one is obese, he would have high leptin level as leptin level is proportional to the amount of fats present in body because leptin is mostly produced in adipose tissue. Leptin control hunger, and leptin desensitized can cause high craving for food which further leads to sweet food to satisfied the crave. See any relationship between leptin and insulin?i hope you do .
Back to the weight training and cardio, it is just part of a simple fitness plan to enhance one's fitness and also alter his/her body composition. In my opinion, weights or anaerobic activity ( activity which dont need utilize oxygen) are enough alone to reduce one body fat level to a low extend such as 8-12% as we can see in sprinters. However, in our stage, to increase the fitness level in obese guy , cardio definitely play a more important role. It is hard to ask a big sumo to sprint 100m , he might even faint off due to the weak heart they have.
In conclusion, aerobics plus weight training are definitely the way to fitness and fight off metabolic diseases like diabetes although diet too play an important role which i will discuss in my next post
